Title: Prolonged Sequence of Intensifications, Densifications and Disruptions

Last Name: Barr

First Name: Brandon

Running Time:
3:24

Year: 2012

Country: USA (New York)

Website: www.brandonhbarr.com

Synopsis: I'm interested in pushing the cinematic experience into a more physical or real space and pulling out the raw qualities of the imagery. This often involves extreme fictional or sci-fi action sequences that are saturated in computer-generated graphics. By rearranging and re-appropriating this content, a sense of exaggeration or excess gets pulled out and pushed into an ontological, ambiguous and experiential space, thus bringing an awareness of these phenomena in our own culture. One video involves glitching a scene from the movie "Transformers Dark of the Moon" where an enormous worm-like robot demolishes a skyscraper in the city. After this sequence was moshed, I projected it large and re-recorded it with my cell phone giving it another rough reprocessed layer of abstraction almost resembling that of a real-life event. All of these elements combined with chaotic and synthesized audio create an overwhelming affect that pushes and pulls you through layers of intensity, digitized illusion and reality.

Title: Overburden

Last Name: Ciarrocchi

First Name: Maya

Running Time:
20:00

Year: 2012

Country: USA (New York)

Website: www.mayaciarrocchi.com

Synopsis: Every year, forty-three million tons of coal is taken from West Virginia through Mountaintop Removal mining. Most of us outside of West Virginia probably imagine this is done by miners working deep underground at tasks they have done for generations, however, since the Eighties, coal companies have used far fewer miners and far more explosives to blast through the top of mountains to their coal seams within. In this world, the immediately recognizable rolling tips of the Appalachian Range are called "overburden". The overburden is dumped into the valley streams that abound in the American rain forest. The results have been profound and irreversible to the topography and eco-systems of Appalachia. For the pro-coal West Virginians, the flat industrial use land left behind is perfect for development of commercial ventures. They would also argue that the areas most affected are sparsely populated and grateful to have any work. Environmentalists and locals opponents argue that even sparsely populated places are nevertheless populated with living people, some who have lived in harmony with the land since the original pioneers came to America. Currently, because of Mountaintop Removal, many families have been forced from their land by dust, poisoned ground water and encroaching noise. Cancer is ubiquitous. Their elected representatives on the state and federal level are heavily lobbied and their connection to the wooded hills has been permanently broken by the massive land holdings ceded to coal companies and their policy of prohibiting trespassing on these lands. Opponents also argue that if this can be done to them, in a democracy, in America today, then it can be done to any disenfranchised community. Overburden is comprised of footage of active and abandoned mines juxtaposed with video portraits of activists, local residents, and miners. The video images reflect the conflicting realities of life in West Virginia: the lushness of the landscape and the desolation of the mines. The work is documentary in style but contains no commentary or interviews. My goal with this work is to create a durational work of open narrative that presents no single agenda other than exposing the complex issues surrounding energy production in the United States. All politics in this country right now are so polarized that it has become difficult to treat each issue at hand as specific to a specific place and time and affecting specific people. Without these specifics, it is impossible to feel the permanence in our decisions. In Overburden I would like to create a space where the viewer can simply look at and take in the human and natural elements of this one issue. Through extended video portraits viewers can reflect on the people and through landscape portraits viewers are given the natural, eternal environment around them. This is not a case where some people are evil and others are good, but where everyone has specific influences informing them, specific concerns of their own, and specific ways of being a citizen in today's world.

Title: Ved'ma

Last Name: Eichhorn

First Name: Cornelia

Running Time:
14:00

Year: 2012

Country: France

Synopsis: This is a three-channel installation/experimental film, telling simultaneously the stories of three women intertwined. They could be the same woman at three different stages of her life, sisters or three generations. The stories are perverted modern-fairy-tale stereotypes of women without a happy-ending questioning identity, generation and motherhood. They are a metaphor for relationships: Who influences whom? Who depends on whom? How do we perceive the other? Who manipulates whom? Who guides us, who serves us as a role model, as an ideal? It's an eternal quest, which is perpetrated from one generation to the other. Ved'ma is an ancient Russian word, which meant, witch in old Russian, today it means old mare. This title remains ambiguous between fascination and rejection, as are the characters of the film.

Title: Ghost of Yesterday

Last Name: Gault

First Name: Tony

Running Time:
5:30

Year: 2012

Country: USA (Colorado)

Synopsis: "Ghost of Yesterday" - a collage of anonymous home movies - is inspired by childhood memories of religion and altered consciousness. The film explores our collective abandonment of analog imagery and is my personal attempt to reconcile with digital imagery.

I first optically print selected Super 8 shots, blowing up the original to isolate lyrical moments - movement, shadow, gesture, grain - to 16 mm film. Then, using After Effects in the more painstaking and tedious fashion of handcrafted animation, I remove the background image, frame by frame, further isolating the positive space.

Title: Smokestacks, Below

Last Name: Johansson

First Name: Panu

Running Time:
6:16

Year: 2012

Country: Finland

Synopsis: Cinema has always had a special interest in factory workers. In fact the first Lumière Brothers film "Workers Leaving the Factory" from 1895 has often been credited as the first motion picture ever made. In the 20th century also many experimental filmmakers depicted the rat race of modern life in their own way. Such films include for example"Manhatta" (1921) by Paul Strand, "By Night with Torch and Spear" (1940s) by Joseph Cornell and "Necrology" (1969-1970) by Standish Lavender. "Smokestacks, Below" continues the same tradition.

"Smokestacks, Below" shows the darker and harsher side of industrial environment. The overall mood of the found footage based film is somewhat gloomy. Both the editing and audio track also reflect repetitive mechanical patterns, which underline the lack of human touch. The factory is no longer a dynamic futuristic powerhouse but an alienating, decayed surrounding filled with lifeless automation.

This film is the second part of a two-film series describing factory work. The two films of the series "Men at Work" (2010-2012) and "Smokestacks, Below" (2012) have been compiled from the same found footage material. When screened together they demonstrate aptly the vast possibilities of found footage filmmaking. However, the films can be screened individually as well.

I am struck by similarities to the brazen inhumanities committed today in the name of religion or politics or greed. The images could be from any war. Title: RUFUS

First Name: Tony

Running Time:
4:00

Year: 2012

Synopsis: Essentially my current methodology in my video work began as a fluke or experiment. I was filming flood damage from hurricane Irene at a local creek and while trying to navigate through the brush and trees I kept my video camera rolling. When I began to edit some of my captures I decided to leave the erratic rotated imagery in the mix. The mundane suddenly transformed into the beautiful: ("RUFUS").

I decided to create more of this type of imagery but I needed it a bit more stable so I invented a device for my tripod that allowed me to pan and rotate at the same time. I wanted something a bit more colorful to enhance this Kaleidoscope effect so I ventured down to one of the most colorful places I know, Times Square, NYC. ("Square Buzz").

The resulting imagery was shot completely at random, which I think makes it even more exciting! Taking it a step further I wanted some more motion and activity in the film so I captured the imagery on my subway trek into NYC ("Stand Clear of the Closing Doors Please"). All of the background music is via my collaboration with FUMBATA.
